The Whisper of Wings is set in occupied Denmark amidst the turmoil of World War II, and actual places and events are integral to the storyline. It is a time when those under Nazi rule are confronted with blatant evil, and a simple choice can mean life or death for a fellow human being.

This novel is inseparably bound to powerful themes such as knowing and living the truths of the Christian faith, practicing detachment from earthly things and understanding that God is the highest good, and realizing that a sacrifice out of love is the greatest gift possible. Another key element is the need to discern one’s vocation to find what God’s will is for each person’s life. The title of the book is a reference to St. Thérèse’s analogy of a loving soul soaring straight to God like a bird, an idea that is essential to the story and featured prominently.

As readers uncover the plot of this novel, they will find it filled with insights into the spiritual life and rich in practical life lessons. Clarity comes from silence. Conversion is inspired by example. True peace is found in the Word of God. The main characters, Annette and Rachel, struggle to survive the dark, irresistible storm of Nazi occupation, all the while fighting their own interior battles.

While The Whisper of Wings is written with young people aged 11 through 16 in mind, we hope it will be enjoyed by all ages, especially as a family read-aloud. This book is sure to provoke healthy family conversation.

About the Author

Hannah Germain is a young lady from southern Virginia. An accomplished pianist, she is happiest playing Chopin and tolerates Bach only when on the organ. In addition to her love of music, she enjoys curling up with a book, especially if it is WWII fiction, a work by Robert Hugh Benson or G. K. Chesterton, and literature on Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. She co-authored Let the Blade Fall, a play about the Carmelite Martyrs of Compiegne, and has written articles for Oremus Press newspaper.
